Straight Order takes time honours

Special correspondent Palmerston North Straight Order easily took time honours when he galloped in great style at Awapuni yesterday morning. Straight Order is entered for the first day of the Wellington meeting with the race likely to prove a good guide to his Wellington Guineas prospects a week later. He has continued to improve since his impressive win at New Plymouth on October 1 and it will take something special to lower his colours at Wellington.

Trainer, Patrick Campbell, has Lagerfeld in the main stying race on Saturday and Lagerfeld worked like an improver in finishing ahead of Fort Cheval, which also lines up in the Watkins Handicap. Working on a soft course proper Straight Order ran 1000 m in Imin 4s, the last 600 m in 375, and he was travelling sweetly at the end of the gallop. So was Lagerfeld. He accounted for Fort Cheval at the end of 1200 m in Imin 225, the last 600 m in 41s. Lagerfeld does not race his best on wet ground so his chances this week-end will be determined by the weather. He is better for recent racing and all going well he will contest the Rotorua Cup later this month. But he will need to perform well on Saturday to justify a trip north. Fort Cheval is on the improve but might be better for an outing on Saturday. Star Tripper is in good order for the Mainzeal Mile at Trentham. He was going strongly with Melbeck at the end of 1200 m in Imin 245, the last 600 m in 40s. Melbeck is another on the upgrade though he is unlikely to race until the second day at Wellington. Mr Hawk and Samoza, likely runners at Te Aroha next week, covered 1200 m in Imin 275, the last 600 m in 445, and Straight and True required 56.4 s for 800 m, the final 600 m in 41.45. Device sprinted 600 m in 39s and might race at Hawera next week. Classic Style worked well over 1200 m in Imin 225, the last 600 m in 41s. He is one of five trainer Gus Clutterbuck will take south this week, with most running at Riccarton on Saturday. Zelazny, which ran a bold race in the Masterton Cup, is on the march south along with Blitz, Whizz Kid and Doodwell. Classic Style was placed at Blenheim and should pay his way at Riccarton. Mr Milson, a likely candidate for the Watkins Handicap, covered 1600 m in Imin 595, the last 600 m in 435, while Londonderry was timed over 600 m in 39.65. Sophie’s Secret, another in the Watkins, worked with Jesterman and they ran 1200 m in Imin 255, the last 600 m in 435. Tipperary Kingdom took a slow Imin 15s for 1000 m, and Emotional Rescue left 1000 m behind in Imin 14s. Golden Realm and Fun on the Run, both with Noel Eales, were timed over 800 m in 565, the last 600 m in 425, and Superior Wine and a Jubilee Wine filly with Patrick Campbell completed 800 m in 535, the final 600 m in 38s. Red Shari and a Khairpour gelding with the Kayes ran 600 m in 395. Assention and Taps ran 600 m in 39s and impressive last start winner, Lady’s Secret, looked fit running 800 m in 58.55, the last 600 m in 41s. She is on target for Trentham.

Bright Em Notes ran from the 1200 m in Imin 26.4 s and I’m Rushin and Sesame Street registered 41s for 600 m. I’m Rushin might race at the Te Aroha meeting next week.
