Auto Air superior
PA Matamata Auto Air, the eleventh favourite in a 15-horse field, proved too good for his rivals in the $20,000 J. Swap Contractors, Ltd, Matamata Cup at the Matamata Racing Club’s meeting yesterday. Ridden by Cambridge apprentice, Lisa Cropp, and prepared at Awapuni by Laurie Christiansen, Auto Air trailed before taking over early in the home straight. He was untested and beat the favourite, Regal City, by two and a half lengths. Bourbon Boy was third after being handy throughout with St James and Sounds Like Fun next to finish. Auto Air, a five-year-old bay gelding by Norfolk Air from Automation, has now won nine races and with 16 minor placings has stakes in excess of $168,000 from 36 starts. The Wealleans Ground Spread Handicap (1200 m completed the T.A.B. double with the Matamata Cup and went the way of Final Aid, which was having his first race since mid-May. Trained at Te Aroha by Neralee-Ann Robinson and ridden by Alison Craig, Final Aid, after racing handy throughout, saved ground on the inner around the home turn and held off the determined challenge of Savana City in the straight.
Final Aid was a neck in front of the runner-up at the line, Honour Bright next home a length and aquarter away. Catering King, topweight with 58kg, fought on to take fourth.
