Williams shifting to Orari
DAVID McCARTHY
By
Gerry “Boxer,” Williams, a Riccartonbased jockey for the last 15 months, has moved south to Orari where he will join Ray Pankhurst’s stable.
Williams has accepted an offer from Pankhurst because of financial considerations and in the hope his weight will stabilise in a new environment. Weight problems have seriously reduced his opportunities in recent months.
In spite of that Williams has ridden seven winners this term so far, and is one of the leading South Island-based jockeys.
He rode 45 winners last season lifting his lifetime total to nearly 250. Williams arrived south from the Central Districts to join the stable of Michael Pitman in June 1987. One of his early wins was a fortuitous one, on Morgan Page at Oamaru, when Katie Crowe had to forfeit the ride through injury. Beks, Decree Nisi, Robinski and Reykjavik were other smart gallopers he was associated with while more recently he has been to the fore with the talented three-year-old, Saveur. Given his weightrestricted opportunities he has done well since shifting south and has no interest in returning to the North Island.
