Prison term extended for knife robbery

PA Wellington A prison inmate had his jail term extended by four months after he pleaded guilty in the District Court at Upper Hutt to stealing two containers of motor oil while being in possession of a knife. Sergeant Roger Hough told the court Cameron Martin, aged 29, had called at a service station in Upper Hutt about 1 a.m. on June 25. He had taken the oil

valued at $17.98 and put this in his car without paying. Several people at the service station had seen a knife with a blade about 13cm long, tucked in his jeans. Counsel for Martin. Mr John Gwilliam, said the defendant had been heavily intoxicated and there had been no indication he had intended using the knife to intimidate. Judge Bate said an intoxicated person with a

knife was a danger. Martin had a record of offending. While most had been for offences against property, he had one conviction for an offence against the person in 1981, for which he had been sentenced to three years jail. Martin was sentenced to one month jail for theft and three months for unlawful possession of a knife, the sentences to be cumulative on the 12month term he is serving.
