Fishy find in pockets
NZPA-AAP Sydney Customs officials thought something was fishy when they swooped on a man, aged 56, returning to Sydney from Malaysia with plastic bags of water in his pockets. As the man waddled through customs, officials checked his pockets to find 11 live carp swimming in plastic bags of water. The Customs Service said the fishy haul was the second find of live carp in the last three months. “On the previous occasion, 31 live carp were found in luggage brought into Australia from Singapore,” customs officials said. The carp, of Japanese origin, are prolific breeders and are reputed to ruin the ecology of waterways by eating water plants. Officials are continuing their inquiries into both offences
