Manager wonders about ‘jinx’

The manager of the Cranmer Centre wondered if she might be “jinxed” as she watched flames licking the former Christchurch Girls’ High School hall and library last Saturday evening. The fire brought back memories for Ms Biddy Grant, who previously worked at the Methodist Central Mission, the scene of another fire. The blaze on Saturday razed the interior of the Cranmer Centre's 110-year-old hall. "So many people have put so much work into the place. A fire can cause so much heart-break,” said Ms Grant. The hall has become a charred shell. The walls are scarred and kauri beams have been blackened by soot. The roof has been ruined. “I really feel sorry for the building,” said Ms Grant. The fire could have been worse, she said. The Fire Service had acted promptly, and the rest of the building was spared apart from water damage. “No-one was injured. We are so grateful for that.” The tenant organisations affected by the fire were yesterday being transferred to the Arts Centre. Insurance assessors and fire-safety investigators have inspected the damage. The fire is not being treated as suspicious. An open day which had been proposed to show off the building has been postponed. “Now its just a matter of keeping on cleaning up,” Ms Grant said. t
