Ambassador’s warning
Sir, —Maurice Nicoll believes the Americans but not the Russians. He spoils his divisive, hate-the-Soviets fantasy by asking us to judge them by their actions and fruit. America has invaded Russia in military force. Russia has never invaded America. The chances of that happening are about the same as the Earth reversing its orbit. The Russians have been coming here for so long that the original fort built to repel them is a musuem piece. It seems to me that if the Russian economy did not have to bear the burden of the arms race it would flourish, yet the American economy would collapse and unemployment rocket if its arms industry were to wind down. “He who lives by the sword ...” — Yours, etc.,
