Dairy workers reject pay offer

PA Rotorua Union negotiators have rejected a dairy factory employers’ offer of a 3 per cent pay rise and are holding out for at least 9.5 per cent. The union response came from a belief that the dairy industry has the capacity to pay substantially more than the offer, said the national secretary of the Dairy Factory Workers’ Union, Mr Ray Potroz. The workers wanted their wage increase and a

profit sharing bonus based on the $4 a kilogram end of season payout, he said. The wage talks entered their second day yesterday at Rotorua. The employers’ advocate, Mr Graeme Perfect, said he believed there was some merit in the union proposal for a profit- sharing agreement. “It’s encouraging that the union is considering alternatives for pay-fixing. We believe there is some merit in performancebased schemes.”
