Pasta pandering for pandas
Pandas prefer pasta, says a New Zealand food company that is preparing a special diet for the giant pandas expected in Auckland early next month. Xiao Xiao and Fei Fei, two giant pandas from China, will be fed a special diet during their two-month stay in New Zealand, according to Ms Jill Dunn, a nutritional consultant with Healtheries of New Zealand, Ltd. The pandas’ custodians were most particular about the quality of their diet, and Healtheries was honoured to be chosen to supply their daily food, said Ms Dunn,
The ingredients of the “panda pasta” will include rice flour, soy flour and polenta, a specially ground maize cornflour, and will be supplemented with bamboo, sugar cane, apples and boiled eggs. New Zealand Post is also preparing for the panda visit, and will issue a special panda date-stamp on October 20. Those wanting first-day covers should forward stamped, addressed envelopes in an outer envelope labelled Panda Covers, The Manager, New Zealand Post, Philatelic Sales Centre, Chief Post Office, Auckland, by October 17.
