Kirwan could return
PA Auckland Maurice Trapp, the Auckland selector-coach, says he will call for a stronger effort from his team in the Ranfurly Shield challenge from Canterbury on Saturday. Mr Trapp said he would not name his team until training tomorrow. The All Black wing, John Kirwan, recovering from a hamstring injury, took part in light training
last evening. “John is pretty confident he will be able to play,” said Mr Trapp. “The only real casualty at the moment is Terry Wright, who cannot be considered after being knocked out in the Otago game on Saturday.” Mr Trapp paid tribute to the strength of the Otago challenge, saying he expected a "typically barnstorming” challenge
from Canterbury. “Canterbury will be all the harder, as their own shield-holding record will be at stake. “I take their loss against Counties last Saturday with a grain of salt. Canterbury are always very hard against Auckland. “We did not play terribly well against Otago, although that is a credit to Otago,” he said.
