Philpott to miss game
Shayne Philpott was a disconsolate passenger at the Canterbury rugby team’s training run at Rugby Park last evening. The Burnside player’s strained leg is taking time to come right and he will not be at fullback against Auckland on Saturday. Philpott, who reached his 100 points for the season against Otago, fell the wrong way after smin of the match against Counties last Saturday. He is unable to stretch out and admitted
last evening that he would not feel confident if he had to play. Richard Connell, whose kicking was faultless against Counties when he scored 14 of Canterbury’s 18 points, will return to the fullback’s position he occupied throughout .the South Pacific championship, and his Marist teammate, Greg Coffey, ironically the first-choice goal-kicker at club level, has been added to the squad to cover for Connell.
Brent Harvey, who also failed to finish the Counties game, jogged lightly last evening and he may return to the team as the loosehead prop. The Canterbury team will not be announced until tomorrow evening, but a likely XV is: Connell; Mark Vincent, Andrew McCormick, Andrew Simcock; Warwick Taylor, Stephen Bachop; Bruce Deans; Andy Earl; Stephen Dods, Albert Anderson, Grant Mickeli, Robin Penney; Tala Kele, John Buchan, Harvey.
