Waimea clears domain of campers

The long-running battle by the Waimea County Council to evict illegal campers from the Appleby Domain near Nelson has ended with the peaceful departure of the last house-trucks. A locked gate ensures that no more mobilehome dwellers can set up house in the common. The Appleby Domain has been used for longterm camping for more than five years and at times as many as 30 families in mobile homes have lived there. However, the Waimea County Clerk, ,Mr Albert Aubrey, said the number had dwindled to a handful Eviction notices were served on all campers at the domain last month with the exception of one family which had obtained an interim injunction in 1985 restraining the county from trying to evict them. However, they left Nelson and moved to the West Coast The county was awaiting a fixture in the High Court to enforce the eviction notices through a court order for possession of the domain. In the meantime the County Solicitor, Mr Warwick Heal, served orders on about a dozen domain residents which in effect claimed back rent from them, and it was after this move that the last of the mobile-home dwellers packed up and left
