Bolger responds
PA Wellington Participation in tertiary education should be encouraged rather than penalised, said the Leader of the Opposition, Mr Bolger, yesterday. In a statement responding to Monday’s release of the Hawke report, which recommends tertiary students paying more for their education, Mr
Bolger said the Government “knows the price of everything and the value of nothing.” “It is clear it does not appreciate the worth of education,” Mr Bolger said. It was another misguided attempt to move everything on to a userpays basis.
“The Government has got its priorities all wrong. “On October 1 it will give massive tax cuts to the rich and now it proposes imposing an extra tax on young New Zealanders who are prepared to forgo earnings to acquire qualifications which, while of personal benefit, will also be of benefit to the wider community.
