Former top boxer dies
Dave McGirr, a former Canterbury lightweight boxing champion who met and beat many of the country’s most proficient amateurs, died in Christchurch last week. Mr McGirr was prominent during the 19305, when the sport was at its peak. Renowned for his courage and determination, Mr
McGirr’s stirring victory over the renowned Tiger Mitchell was a highlight of his career. Another notable win was achieved at the expense of Norm Jenkin, of Oamaru, who was then the holder of the Jameson Belt as the most scientific competitor at the national championships. Mr McGirr is survived by his wife and two sons.
