Haydn’s ‘Paukenmesse’
Haydn’s “Paukenmesse” will be performed by the Cathedral of the Blessed Sacrament Choir and Orchestra in a concert at the cathedral on October 1 at 8.15 p.m. Their interpretation of the “Paukenmesse,” sometimes called “Mass in Time of War,” was recently warmly received by concert audiences in Sydney, Canberra and Melbourne. Soloists are Maria Archer, Louise Richardson, Wally Enright and Chris Whelan. The orchestra is led by Eva Schwanen-Lilley, and the performance is directed by Don Whelan. Ellen Doyle, cello soloist in the “Paukenmesse,” directs a combined orchestra drawn mainly from Christchurch Girls’ and Boys’ High Schools in the first half of the programme. Her pupil, James Bush, will be the cello soloist in Couperin’s “Pieces en Concert.” The schools’ orchestra will also be heard in the Faure “Pavane” and the finale of Beethoven’s “Pastorale Symphony.”
