High salaries
Sir,—lt is reported that the Prime Minister of this small and impoverished country now receives a larger salary than the Prime Minister of either the United Kingdom or Australia. A generous reward is needed to attract top talent and match that offered senior company executives. However, the politician who confuses greed with party principles ought not to be in Parliament. The Leader of the Opposition and new champion of the under-privileged ignored the Prime Minister’s increase with a thunderous silence as he, along with the entire House, pocketed their enlarged pay cheques. Neither did his temporary bedfellow and white knight of the working class, Jim Anderton, nor National Party’s financial spokesperson, Ruth Richardson, who frequently declares that reduced
Government spending is imperative, reject the increment. Shortly, yet another State Higher Salaries Commission increase .is due. What this time will the greedies do? If the needies do not see the next unwarranted rise refused, one wonders what at some time they will do? — Yours, etc., N. BARRETT. September 23, 1988.
