Cup claims strengthened
NZPA-AAP Melbourne The imported stayer, Kudz, strengthened his Melburne Cup claims at Moonee Valley on Saturday and is now challenging last year’s winner, Kensei, for favouritism.

in front of Lord Delamere (16-1). Major Drive (15-1) stormed home and was a close fourth. Trainer Colin Hayes said Kudz was the stable’s best Melbourne Cup chance while Authaal is his elect at this stage for the Caulfield Cup. Authaal, which won the Underwood Stakes (2000 m at Caulfield last Thursday, is the Caulfield Cup favourite at 6-1.
Kudz and Authaal were both bred in America and are six-year-old stallions. In the Caulfield Cup, Kiidz firmed from 33-1 to 16-1 and is on the fourth line of betting.
Kudz was having his fifth Australian start and has won up to 3600 m in Europe. Among his best performances was a third placing in the Doncaster Cup (3600 m as a four-' year-old. Kudz has 52.5 kg in the Caulfield Cup and 52kg in the Melbourne Cup. Hayes has four horses in the top five lines of betting for the Caulfield Cup with Water Boatman at 12-1 and Bonhomie at 20-1. The same four horses are in the top six lines in the Melbourne Cup — Au-, thaal (10-1), Water Boatman (14-1) and Bonhomie (20-1).
