River work
Sir,—Could the chief engineer of the Christchurch Drainage Board please explain why board employees are cutting away the overhanging grass and weeds from the banks of the Heathcote River at a time when ducklings are about to appear? From past observations the overhanging grass provides protection for the ducklings and it seems a pity that this work could not have been scheduled for later in the season. — Yours, etc., (Miss) ROSEMARY EVERETT. September 8, 1988. [The chief engineer, Mr H. P. Hunt, replies: “The removal of overhanging grass and weeds from the river bank is part of normal ongoing maintenance. It is even more important to keep up with it in the spring as this is a period of strong growth. This work has been undertaken every year without any apparent harm to the duck population.”]
