Conservation cuts
Sir,—Evelyn Robins wrote to you (August 31) requesting you to obtain from the Minister of Conservation answers to two simple straightforward questions: (1) Whether those responsible for the overspending (in the Department of Conservation during 1987-88) were among those made redundant; and (2) whether those areas which kept within their budget were less affected by the cuts than those which overspent. As I say, two simple, logical questions which could actually be answered by “yes” or “no” in both cases. The letter and the Minister’s “reply” were published in "The Press”
on September 15. Nowhere in the Minister’s statement is there any semblance of an answer to the questions raised —- questions a lot of others are asking. Evelyn Robins and every other taxpayer deserves better than that. Simple questions deserve simple answers. — Yours, etc., KEVIN O’CARROLL. September 21, 1988.
