Unemployment
Sir,—One can only stand amazed at the Government’s apparent lack of concern over recent job losses. Islington works is just one of many large companies which have closed, leaving more unemployment. The indifference towards Christchurch’s needs have been shown up by the failure to grant Lyttelton the opportunity to refit the New Zealand frigate. Instead of buying new frigates from Australia, why not build them in New Zealand to decrease the unemployment leyel substantially? In a couple of months I will be leaving school, but what chance do I have of getting a job when even the Government does not support the unemployed? — Yours, etc., P. PHILLIPS. September 21, 1988.
