Tasmanian tiger
Sir, —I note with interest the Tasmanian tiger picture advertisement (September 20) under the caption “Considered extinct since 1936.” A romantic expatriot Tasmanian I may be, but I believe most strongly that this marsupial is not extinct at all! To set the record straight, the Tasmanian tiger, Thylacinus cynochalus (meaning pouched dog with a wolf’s head), is believed by a great many people to be alive and living in remote bush-clad areas of Tasmania. The last captive specimen died in Hobart in 1936. Many sightings have been reported since although the only scientific documentation has been photographed footprints. Extensive searches are still being carried out, suggesting that others, like myself, would rather believe ,in this animal’s existence than its extinction.—Yours, etc., SUSAN YULE. September 20, 1988.
