Conservation

Sir,—An article on September 16 must fill conservation-minded people with alarm. It states that many of the responsibilities already held by the Department of Conservation will be handed over to local authorities. This was a statement given by the new director-general of the department, David McDowell. There is an obvious sympathy by local authorities for developers and entrepreneurs. Locally, this has been seen in the Victoria Square tower project, the Mount Cavendish scenic reserve, McCormack’s Bay reclamation proposal for reading improvements, and there is the threat to Travis Swamp, when New Zealand wetlands are in serious decline. If viewers of television saw the film called “The Sea Coast” during Conservation Week recently, it was obvious that local authorities are responsible for the granting of permits for developments which deny access to public land, and for the loss of valuable parts of the environment. — Yours, etc., B. R. HANSEN. September 21, 1988.
