Tranz-Alpine trip
Sir, —As a young sailor on leave I travelled on numerous occasions between Christchurch and Ross (my home in those days) utilising the steam train or railcar. Last Friday (September 16) I relived that experience by travelling aboard the Tranz-Al-pine. Even though the panoramic views are still proudly displaying the real symbol of New Zealand and the peace and tranquillity remain unchanged, I would like to mention the service. Throughout the entire journey one could
not help noticing the amiable way both the guard (Mr Ken Thompson) and the steward (Mr Peter Seilander) went about their assigned duties. In addition to conducting their duties in a very professional manner, both ventured beyond their terms of reference to ensure all passengers were comfortable and well catered for. If some of their personality and attitude were to rub off it would not only foster public relations but enhance and promote overseas tourism. — Yours, etc., KEN JOHNSTON. September 19, 1988.
