Green to be relocated
Tenders will be called next month by the Christchurch City Council for the relocation of a bowling green and soil shed for the Opawa Bowling Club. The relocation will be done as part of the preparation for the second stage of the Opawa expressway.
One of the club’s greens is on land needed for the new road and the council has bought an adjoining property to provide a new green fronting Ensors Road. The council is still negotiating for the last property needed for the
construction of the expressway. The property is owned by the Justice Department. The timetable for the expressway is subject to National Roads Board funding, which the council hopes to secure in December. The approximate budget for the project is $2.8 million, which includes $175,000 for the relocation of the bowling green and shed. Demolition of houses is expected to cost $20,000, the bridge over the Heathcote River, $l.l million, carriageway construction, $900,000 and
landscaping, $50,000. Legal survey expenses are expected to be another $20,000 and engineering design and supervision $300,000. A contingency of $225,000 is included. If Roads Board funding is available in December, the tender for the bridge could be approved by March next year and the bridge completed about a year later. The carriageway would be finished by September, 1990, and landscaping by February, 1991. The council will issue a publicity leaflet when the timetable is finalised.
