$113,604 given
Pledges, grants and cash contributions to the West Coast flood relief fund had reached $113,604 yesterday afternoon. Mr David Stapleton, principal officer of the West Coast United Council, which is administering the fund, said that he was delighted with the response. Residents in 29 floodstricken houses in Greymouth have told the Housing Corporation that they do not wish to return to
their homes. The acting manager of the corporation at Greymouth, Mr Graeme McDonald, said the the limited resources available to it would make rehousing the families difficult “but we must be positive and say that we can do it.” The Social Welfare Department now has 49 adults and 14 children in hotel, motel, and guesthouse accommodation and a further 106 adults and 30 children billeted out.
