One of six
Counties has been one of the six teams to retain it division one status since the introduction of the national championship in 1976. The other five are Auckland, Wellington, Canterbury, Otago and Manawatu, although Manawatu is precariously placed this season. Counties’ only championship win was in 1979 after it had been runnerup the previous two years.
