Slight edge
. Canterbury’s 32-17 victory over Counties in Pukekohe last year has given it a slight edge on the win-loss slate in the national championship. The two teams have met on 12 occasions and Canterbury, which has won the last five contests, four of them comfortably, has gained six successes and a draw.
Counties proved a problem team for Canterbury in the early years of the championship. The North Island side prevailed in five of the first six fix-
tures, winning three at Lancaster Park.
In those initial years, however, Counties was very much to the fore of New Zealand rugby and did not finish out of the top four in the first eight years.
Their championship results have been:— 1976: Counties 11, Canterbury 6. 1977: Canterbury 9, Counties 4.
1978: Counties 21, Canterbury 6. 1979: Counties 7, Canterbury 0.
1980: Counties 21, Canterbury 15. 1981: Counties 35, Canterbury 9.
1982: Canterbury 15, Counties 15.
1983: Canterbury 37, Counties 3.
1984: Canterbury 27, Counties 19.
1985: Canterbury 19, Counties 15.
1986: Canterbury 32, Counties 7. 1987: Canterbury 32, Counties 17.
