Kiwi yacht close to cup
PA Wellington The Kiwi yacht Propoganda was eight minutes behind the leader, Braburra, at the turn around point of the first leg in the fourth and final one ton world cup race off San Francisco yesterday.
The Rick Dodsonskippered boat has won the last three races in the series and only needs to be well placed at the end of the current 139nautical mile race in order to carry off the cup. The New Zealand challenge manager, Chris Cooney, said the Kiwi boats, Propoganda and Fair Share, were in fairly good positions in the series.
Propoganda is first with 97 points, ahead of Fram-X which is on 82 points. The American yacht Rush is lying third on 71 points while Fair Share was in fourth position over all with 63 points. “Fram-X is. a Bruce Farr-designed boat and is the current one ton champion sailed by Norway’s Prince Harald,” Mr Cooney said. “At this stage, Propoganda needs only to finish well up the order in the final race to clinch the championship.” 'After the first 40 miles there was only a difference of six minutes from second placed Propoganda to the tenth boat in the race, Mr Cooney said.
