1000 winners for Walsh

David Walsh rode his 1000th winner when Majestic Wolf won the Watties Maiden at the Hawke’s Bay Jockey Club’s meeting at Hastings yesterday. Majestic Wolf was one of four winning rides for Walsh at the meeting. The others were Critic’s Choice (on a protest), Sandboy and Boomerdoll.

Walsh becomes the eighth jockey to ride 1000 winners in New Zealand. He has achieved his total in 14 seasons, since winning on Three Sevens at Washdyke in 1974. Majestic Wolf, a halfbrother to Arctic Wolf, is trained by Garth and Craig Ivil, a stable for which Walsh has ridden

some 60 winners. Bill Skelton, with 2156 wins, is the all-time leader among New Zealand jockeys and is followed by his brother, Bob (1739), David Peake (1625), Bill Broughton (1446), Grenville Hughes (1278), Jim Ellis and Garry Phillips (both 1062).
