Sir Jugular thrashes big guns in Guineas
PA Hastings Sir Jugular lowered the colours of the country’s top three-year-olds in yesterday’s Okawa Paramount Hawke’s Bay Guineas at the Hawke’s Bay Jockey Club’s meeting at Hastings. In taking out the $45,000, 1400 metre semiclassic, Sir Jugular dented the reputations of such well-performed gallopers as Purdah’s Pride, Come Racing and Regal Echo, which all failed to figure in the finish. Instead it was left to The Phantom and Crown Symbol to fight out the minor money, both on the track and in the inquiry
room. But after a brief hearing the minor-plac-ings protest was dismissed. Sir Jugular, which is trained and was ridden by the Feilding horseman, Maurice Campbell, was recording his third win from eight starts, but yesterday’s success was his first in such top company. The chestnut colt is by the Australian-bred sire, Truly Vain, which stands at Campbell’s Kentucky Downs Stud, and is out of a former Wrightson “Filly of the Year,” Coober’s Queen. Sir Jugular settled kindly for Campbell in midfield and was always
going to be a threat when he moved up to the: leaders turning for home. ” Under a typically vigor-, ous ride from Campbell; Sir Jugular kept up a solid gallop to beat the fastfinishing The Phantom by’ one and a half lengths, with Crown Symbol a neck back in third place. The hot favourite, Purdah’s Pride, failed to, match his earlier form, which included a win in the Wanganui Guineas. He finished sixth.
While he appeared to have every show, the other favoured runners, Come Racing and Regal Echo, received shocking runs in the straight.
