No estimate of claim costs

By

OLIVER RIDDELL

in Wellington The Treasury has no idea of the cost and has made no contingent steps to meet any liability that might be incurred as a result of claims filed before the Waitangi Tribunal. ■ The Secretary for the Treasury, Dr Graham Scott, was asked what estimate the Treasury had made of the .contingent liability. He told Parliament’s finance and expenditure select committee that no consideration, had. been given to the possible total cost of the claims. The variables were too

many for an estimate to be made with any useful degree of precision. Claims were often couched in terms of the original leases of land and resources, even where there might be no expectation on the part of the claimants that more than a sub-set of these might actually be recovered, Dr Scott said.. Many of the recommendations of the Waitangi Tribunal would be advisory, and much would depend on the general approach taken by the Government on settlements and its response to . particular recommendations. /?
