Yarding and price range mixed

A mixed yarding of cattle produced a mixed range of prices at the Addington market yesterday. Only the best quality cattle were able to sell at levels set last week and over-all price-a-kilogram eased. The sale also produced an outstanding sale of $llBO for a Friesian steer and $712 for grain-fed heifers. A large yarding of adult sheep saw prices slip, with buyers having more than enough stock from which to choose. Lambs remained at last week’s levels, except for a slight increase in some heavier lines. Prime pigs had another good sale, with good-quality stock being offered for sale. A sale of store sheep and cattle will be held today. Prime lambs Lamb prices showed little change from last week’s good sale, although some betterquality stock were able to improve between $1 and $2. Although the yarding was of a reasonable size, it was made up of large lines, making for a quick sale. Demand was steady throughout, with bidding coming from a buying gallery, similar to that of the last few weeks. The yarding was 1258 compared with 1058 last week. Values were: Heavy lambs, $2l to $25, with some sales to $26.60. Medium lambs, $l7 to $2l. Light lambs, $l2 to $l6. Sales included.— M. Hurford (Leeston), 35 at $19.20 to $21.60; W. A. and A. W. Booker (Hawarden), 23 at $lB.BO to $23; E. R. Ashby (Darfield), 25 at $14.40 to

$15.40; P. D. H. Busch (Parnassus), 62 at $16.60 to $25.20; T. J. and A. E. Costello (Hawarden), 191 at $11.20 to $26; Essendon Partnership, Darfield, 103 at $l3 to $23.80; G. C. S. and D. R. The fall was most notable among lighter ewes, with demand from buyers being much less than last week. Some of the better-quality stock was back just $1 on last week. The yarding of 2660, compared with 1970 last week, contained large numbers of light-conditioned sheep, as well as a good number of better-quality heavier sheep. The large yardings of recent weeks mean many butchers have saturated their demand. Best two-tooths made up to $2l, medium weights made $l6 to $lB, and lighter twotooths sold at $l2 to $l5. Better four-tooths made $l7 to $lB. Buyers showed little

preference for woolly sheep, with prices for woolly twotooths and comparable shorn two-tooths often being the same. Values were; Best woolly ewes, to $l5. Heavy shorn ewes, to $13.20. Medium ewes, $8 to $lO. Light ewes, $3 to $7. Sales included.— Old ewes: Lincoln College Cropping Farm (Lincoln), 54 at $6 to $11.80; D. Voice (Springfield), 51 at' $7 to $14.60; K. J. and A. R. The yarding was mixed in breeds as well as in quality. Only the very few pens of good-quality beef-bred steers and heifers made more than $2.05 a kilogram. The other, nondescript cattle made about $2 a kg. The dry conditions and no sign of early spring growth were among the rasons for the mediocre sale. A feature of the market was a large Friesian steer from Mrs Joy Hopkinson, of Tuahiwi, which made $llBO. Grain-fred heifers from Rossendale Holdings, of Halswell, made up to $712. Cows had a more steady sale than recent weeks. The yarding was 385, compared with 262 last week. Best-quality prime steers and heifers only to 220 kg sold between 205 c and 210 c a kilogram; from 220 kg and 270 kg, 205 c to 210 c; and over 270 kg, 205 c to 210 c. Dairy cows A large yarding of 26 dairy cows saw several entries being passed. The top prices for Friesians was $450 for an in-calf heifer. Most other sales of Friesian cows and heifers were at $3OO to $3BO. A jersey cow made $l7B. Bobby calves Buyers showed a slackening in demand for bobby calves as they faced another very large yarding. About 360 were offered for sale yestersday, compared with 316 last week. Most Friesian bulls made $4O to $74, and heifers from $3O to $54. Beef-cross bulls sold at $4O to $7B, while

the heifers made $3O to $56. Prime pigs A large yarding of goodquality prime pigs met keen competition from buyers. The sale showed little change from last week’s values, although mediumweights were up $lO a head. Best baconers made $l7O to $lBO and best porkers made $l2O to $l3O. A large yarding of choppers eased $lO a head, but demand was steady throughout the sale. Top choppers made $lBO. Values were: Light pork, $lOO to $ll5. Heavy pork $l2O to $l3O. Light to medium bacon, $l5O to $l7O. Heavy bacon, to $lB2. Light choppers, $llO to $l3O. Heavy choppers, $l4O to $lBO. Store pigs Few good-quality stores and slips were offered in a medium-sized yarding. The sale lacked the buoyancy of last week and prices were a little easier. Smaller weaners attracted a more consistent demand, with few sales under $3O. Well-bred gilts in the breeding section sold to $3OO, and a good-quality Large White boar made $3lO. Values were: Small weaners, $3O to $37. Good weaners, $4O to $55. Slips and small stores, $6O to $7O. Large stores, to $B5.
