Milford records 501mm
The torrential rain brought by gales which swept across the South Island on Monday brought very heavy falls on the West Coast and parts of the Main Divide. Milford Sound recorded 501 mm in the 72 hours to 9 a.m. During the same period 387 mm of rain was recorded, at East Homer, 312 mm at Fox Glacier, 352 mm at Arthur’s Pass, 191 mm at Hokitika, and 260 mm at The Hermitage, Mount Cook. However, the heaviest falls were recorded in the 24 hours to 9 a.m., Deep Cove, Doubtful Sound, recording the highest fall, 324 mm. In the same 24 hours Greymouth and Hokitika recorded 111 mm, while Westport recorded 50mm. Winds reached their peak about mid-afternoon to late afternoon on Monday, and eased during the evening. The strongest gust in Christchurch of 36 knots was recorded just after 7.30 p.m., and Timaru’s strongest was 54 knots at 2.50 p.m.
