Hope for skiers

Hopes are high that the Kiwi Lager national ski-ing championships will finally be under way at Mount Hutt today after two days delay. The mountain was closed again yesterday but race officials were more confident that a super-G event could be run today. It was snowing on the mountain yesterday afternoon and once the temperatures dropped the groomers were to move in and compact the new snow. A spokesperson • for the organising committee said that the snow was expected to cement to a really hard base, making the super-G course ideal for racing. The super-G is scheduled to start at 10 a.m. with competitors, duly helmeted, having a prior opportunity to race at speed through training courses set up on Broadway. The national championships have now run out of contingency days and it is hoped to hold the super-G today, the giant slalom tomorrow and the slalom on the final day, Friday.
