Veloso colt fleet-footed
Part of a series on youngsters being trained in Canterbury
Tony and Lyn Prendergast have a small juvenile team on hand at this stage of the season but that includes one of the most promising seen out at trials, so far. A Veloso colt, he is a leading prospect for the Prelude, the first juvenile race in the south this season which will be run at Riccarton at the end of the month. The Veloso youngster has a fluent action which suggests he will do more than show an early turn of foot but the fact that he does the latter is not really a surprise. His dam, the Karayar mare Gay Moments, herself won as a two-year-old winning the Fitzherbert Handicap at Trentham in 1977. She is a half-sister to Sanyo, the third best three-year-old of 1974-75. The Prendergast colt is from the first crop of Veloso, which left a winner in Queensland three weeks ago. Veloso is by the staying influence, Zamazaan, but was a good two-year-old himself finishing first three times in six
attempts while his placings include the A.J.C. Champagne Stakes. At three he won the Champion Stakes (Group One) and the Sydney Cup. Veloso’s dam, Top Of The Pops, won two of her three races at two years, including the A.R.C. Welcome Stakes, and left another two-year-old winner in Codeword. Other Prendergasttrained two-year-olds getting through their paces include the Three Legs filly from Queen’s Pal which is unlikely to be asked for much until the autumn though she is pleasing her connections with her efforts so far. Another filly is by Gay Apollo from Boadicea, a half-sister, by Imperialist, to Machiavelli and Tipit among others. There is also a Wolverton filly from Du Barry, a Bismarck mare which was a winner from the Bill Hillis stable.
