Placid Ark up for sale

NZPA-AAP Perth Australia’s fastest horse, Placid Ark, is up for sale. The syndicate which owns the champion sprinter has asked a Western Australian bloodstock agent to find a buyer. Syndicate head, Barry McGrath, said yesterday that the decision was made after the Depo Medrol scandal and the tough rules governing the use of the anti-inflamma-tory drug in Australia, and that an American buyer would be ideal. In some American states some pain killing drugs can be used. McGrath said Placid Ark had been racing without Depo Medrol treatment since July 20, but the syndicate was worried he may need treatment in the future.

The five-year-old scored a gutsy win in the Bobbie Lewis Quality Handicap (1200 m at Flemington on Saturday. “To say we are selling because the horse can’t win without Depo Medrol is untrue,” McGrath said. “But although he won on Saturday there is nothing to say that three weeks down the track he won’t pull up sore and need treatment with therapeutic drugs. “He’s still got two to three year’s good racing in him if he is raced sparingly. I have no doubts whatsoever he can go on winning as an eight-year-old.” Mr McGrath refused to comment on the asking price, but it is believed to be about sAustsoo, ooo ($649,000).
