Flamenco Wave survives protest—appeal pending
NZPA-Reuter Dublin For the second successive Sunday Sheikh Mohammed of Dubai scooped a Group One Irish racing prize after a stewards’ inquiry. The previous week Eng-lish-trained Indian Skimmer was allowed to
keep the Phoenix Champion Stakes after a 10 minute deliberation by officials after the leading two horses came close together. At The Curragh on Sunday the same owner’s Flamenco Wave crossed the line first a head in front of Honoria in the
Moyglare Stud Stakes, a six furlong (1200 metres) test for juvenile fillies. Australian jockey, Ron Quinton, was using his whip in his left hand on Flamenco Wave and just before the line Honoria, ridden by Kevin Manning, looked squeezed for room. Flamenco Wave sur-
vived the stewards’ inquiry, but Jim Bolger, trainer of Honoria, is to appeal. Bolger said: “It is preposterous to say there was no contact between the winner and my filly and I fully intend to pursue the matter with the senior stewards.”
