Water Boatman in favour for Caulfield Cup
NZPA-AAP Melbourne The imported stayer, Water Boatman, was the best-backed runner for the Caulfield Cup (2400 m last week, moving sharply into co-favouritism with the Bart Cummingstrained Sky Chase.
Both horses are at 6-1 for the October 15 feature. Bookmakers restructured their markets after news on Saturday of an injury to dual cups favourite, Beau Zam. Kensei, meanwhile, replaces Beau Zam as favourite for the Melbourne Cup (3200 m on November 1. He won the race last
year and heads the chart from Full At Last and Balciano, both at 8-1. The veteran bookmaker, Syd Lyons, said Water Boatman had been backed from 16-1 to 6-1 in the Caulfield Cup and 20-1 to 10-1 in the Melbourne Cup since his first up Seymour Cup win over 1600 m last Wednesday. It was only Water Boatman’s second start since coming to Australia. He is trained by Colin Hayes. He is at 20-1 in fhe Melbourne Cup. Lyons said Run Straight Run was a notable market mover in the Melbourne Cup, firming into 25-1 following his impressive win in the $125,000 Gloaming Stakes (1900 m at Rosehill last Saturday.
