Drug temptation
NZPA-Reuter Seoul Four Canadian weightlifters who failed drug tests were tempted to cheat because of inadequate training facilities and high Olympic qualifying standards, said the team leader, Yvon Chouinard, yesterday.
Three of the lifters — Jacques Demers, David Bolduc and Paramjit Gill — were dropped from the squad five days ago after tests showed they took the body-building drug stanozabol, a banned anabolic steroid.
The fourth, Kevin. Roy, failed a test for the same drug. He left Seoul on Monday, accepting the choice of a second test in Canada; If that test is negative he could return. Demers s was silver medallist at the 1984 Olympics and Bolduc won three gold medals at the
1987 Pan American Games. “What we need in Canada are. more whirlpools, saunas and training facilities to help give our athletes that extra edge so they don’t resort to drugs,” Chouinard told a news conference.
