Travel by bus and win
Commute has been created as a consequence of the success of “Bus and Win” which the Christchurch Transport Board ran early in 1984. In this campaign commuters collected and matched the tickets they were given, entitling them to popular prizes. “We were casting around for ideas and considered Commute was a game the public would enjoy. It is very topical,” says the deputy general manager of the Christchurch Transport Board, Mr Tony Francis. The aim of the campaign is to increase bus patronage permanently, not just during the weeks Commuto will be running. During the last campaign bus patronage rose sharply. It dropped back when it ended but re-
mained well above precampaign levels. “Government subsidies have been reduced, so we need to cut our costs and increase patronage. Early in October we will reduce some services. At the same time we plan to
improve our efficiency and offer the public a better service,” Many people do not know how to use their local buses so the transport board hopes the campaign will spur them to find out.
