Breakfast bran blaster

NZPA London People could be getting high on their breakfast bran and muesli because of the presence of the mind-blowing drug, LSD, the annual conference of the British Advancement for Science in Oxford has been told.

Dr David Conning, of the British Nutrition Foundation, said LSD was one of a number of chemical substances produced by ergot, a common fungal infestation of wheat. Ergot contamination of cereals was carefully controlled because of the toxic effects.

Nevertheless daily consumption of ergot in cereals could expose people to four times the minimum dose of LSD that produces hallucinogenic effects. “As these fungal contaminants tend to be present mainly in bran, it is conceivable that the current fashion for wholemeal cereals could result in the consumption of enough LSD to effect a lift in mood,” Dr Conning said. Professor Bender said that additives had become a bad word and the trend was for a change from synthetic to natural ingredients. “In fact synthetic additives have been more thoroughly tested than natural ones,” he said.
