Entry forced, blocked

By NIGEL MALTHUS v Two men who broke into a dairy by backing a car through the front window then found they could not get in because the car blocked their way, according to Christchurch police. The incident happened about 5.40 a.m. yesterday, when a stolen Hillman Hunter was crashed through the front window of the Park Dairy, in Acheson Avenue, Shirley. Senior-Sergeant Dick Pettet said that the pair could not get into the shop because the car blocked their way. As members of the public who had heard the crash arrived at the scene, the pair drove off, he said.

A police patrol found the Hillman abandoned nearby, then a short time later found a youth pretending to be asleep in another vehicle in another street nearby. A second youth was arrested after further inquiries, said Senior-Sergeant Pettet. Two youths, aged 17, would appear in court this morning, one charged with burglary and unlawfully taking a motor-vehicle, and the other charged with burglary and unlawfully getting into a motor-vehicle. Senior-Sergeant Pettet said that the Hillman, which had been stolen overnight from an Innes Road address, was not extensively damaged.
