Ski championships
Weather permitting, the 1988 Kiwi Lager national ski championships will begin at Mount Hutt today with the super-G discipline being contested for the first time. A final start list of 66 men and 26 women has been accepted for the one-run, high-speed event. Only one super giant slalom event (a cross between giant slalom and downhill) has previously been contested in New Zealand — at Mount Hutt a year ago and the winner of the women’s section then, Kate Rattray (Queenstown), will be defending her national title this week. The present schedule for the nationals has the Colonial Mutual super-G being raced today, the giant slalom tomorrow and the slalom on Wednesday with Thursday and Friday as contingency days. -
