Lauder toys with cycling field
Aaron Lauder (Hornby) returned to form on Sunday to win the annual Avon Hotel Open 50km Criterium. In appalling weather conditions on the tricky l%km circuit around the Barbadoes Street, Cambridge Terrace, Bealey Avenue area, Lauder made a solo break on the field after the first lap. For the next 49 laps he streaked away from the other riders and failed by only Bcm to lap them.
The annual Gorges race was held in very cold conditions the previous day. Invercargill’s Clark Burns won the 140 km event which took riders from Papanui to Yaidhurst . through Woodend,
Rangiora, Loburn, Ashley Gorge, Oxford, Waimakariri Gorge and Darfield. An 18-strong bunch of riders contested the sprint finish at Yaldhurst, where Clark Burns prevailed over Craig Scott (Hornby), Jim Ryder (Timaru) and Simon Hollander (Hornby) for the major placings. The contest between the large scratch group for the fastest time honours was also decided in a mass sprint, and Darrell Kircher (Hornby) was successful ahead of Michael Leahy (Woolston), Lauder and Chris Nicholson (Woolston) in a time of 3hr 26min 445.
