Child abuse
Sir, —The article headed “Religious men more “likely’ to abuse” (August 19) was brought to my attention by workmates, as a joke. I take exception to the heading and introduction to the article because it is a generalisation not adequately supported by the article. It casts upon the character of any religious or morally upright person doubt, which is uncalled for, unnecessary and untrue. A religious man, according to the Oxford Dictionary, is “one' who recognises a personal God, entitled to obedience in conduct and mental attitude.” He is a man conscious of God’s pure, wholesome standards. and, therefore, on guard against, divorced from, degenerate behaviour such as child abuse. To state that he is “more likely” is a contradiction. The heading appears as a public slight on good-living people. — Yours, etc., CLEMENT C. FRYER. August 20, 1988.
