Found launched for relief im Sudan
The New Zealand Save the Children Fund has launched a public appeal for funds for special relief work in the flood-ravaged Sudan.
It . has contributed $lO,OOO to the international appeal. The North Canterbury branch and Kaiapoi sub-branch have contributed a total of $4OOO.
The disaster is greater than initially feared with up to two million people affected, said the fund’s executive officer In New Zealand, Mr John Bowis. The floods, the worst in the area for over 40 years, had damaged water and power supplies, and there was a desperate shortage of shelter and medical supplies, he said.
Diseases such as cholera and typhoid could also arise from contaminated water, lack of sanitation and increased overcrowding, he said.
Donations can be made to the fund’s Christchurch branch, P.O. Box 656, or the New Zealand Headquarters, Box 6584, Wellington.
