A former Ashburton chef, Peter Thornley, won the Lamb Cuisine Award Gold Plaque, 1988, for his dish, “Panache of Lamb Wheelers,” in a competition at Christchurch Polytechnic yesterday. His prize is a plaque for the restaurant at which he is head chef, Wheelers in Ponsonby, and a trip to London and Frankfurt, including a visit to the Frankfurt Culinary Olympics, in October.
The plaque was presented to him by Dame Anne Hercus at a presentation dinner held last evening at the Pacific Park Hotel, Christchurch, the winner of the 1987 Gold Plaque award. The public will have an opportunity to taste the winning dish and those of the three othehr regional winners during a gastronomic week at the Pacific Park from August 20 to 27.
"It was six weeks of hard work, but it was worth it,” said Mr Thornley of his win, which the judges commended for its interesting mix of seven different cuts of lamb. The dish will continue to feature on Wheelers’ menu for the rest of the year.
