Quadrangular tournament
The most successful school in the history of the annual inter-collegiate quadrangular rugby tournament, Nelson College, will play the host team, Christ’s College, on the opening day of this year’s tournament at the college grounds this afternoon.
Nelson College has had 15 successes, three more than Christ’s College which won this season’s Christchurch secondary schools’ first XVs championship. They will play
the late match, the first contest being between the defending champion, Wellington College, and Wanganui Collegiate School.
Christ’s College, Wellington and Wanganui have been traditional rivals since 1890 and the triangular tournament became a quadrangular one when Nelson College accepted an invitation to compete in 1925. The home team had its last success in 1985, when it beat Wellington College,
14-6. Wellington beat Nelson, 19-3, in last year’s final. The first round losers will play off for third and fourth in the curtain-ra-iser to the final at 2 p.m. on Thursday. Special guests at this year’s tournament include a former All Black captain and Christ’s College first XV representative, Jock Hobbs, who will speak at the tournament dinner, and his brothers-in-law, Robbie Deans and Bruce Deans.
