Australian blue-chips sought

NZPA-AAP Sydney After drifting aimlessly for most of the day the Australian share market was marginally firmer by the close of floor trading, as investors chased blue-chip industrial stocks in the late afternoon, brokers said.

"There was never any selling pressure today but there was little buying interest as well,” one broker said. "On these quiet days it just takes a few stocks to push ahead to turn the market firm and that’s what happened this afternoon.” By the close of floor trading the all ordinaries index was 1.2 points firmer at 1625.7.

The all industrials was 8.2 points firmer at 2609 but the gold marker fell 8.1 points to 1884.3 and the all resources was down 3.5 to 880.6. National turnover was a thin 91.96 M shares worth sAustl3s.slM with rises and falls virtually even.

On the industrial boards, Coles Myer jumped 50c to 1100 with brokers saying heavyweight industrials would gain more support as the profit reporting period nears.

ICI was up 10c to 686 while 5c rises took Email to 440 and FAI to 435. Transporters Brambles and Mayne Nickless both improved, up 5c to 1040 and 4 to 654 respectively. However Lend Lease lost 20c to ' 1450, Goodman Fielder, bidding for Rank Hovis, fell 8 to 240, Newscorp dropped 5 to 1040 and market leader BHP was off 4 at 830. Banks were firmer, with

Westpac ending 4c up at 688, the NAB added 2 to 634 and the ANZ was steadv at 485.
