TABLE TENNIS The Avonside club’s second team clinched the Canterbury A grade inter-club table tennis title when it narrowly beat the secondplaced Dallington, six matches to five. Avonside’s first team, without its top player, Karl Entwistle, since early June because of illness, finished a creditable third. In the feature match none of the players won all three singles, but the successful trio of Kevin Duffy, Lyndon White and Henry Redmond won two each. John Baxter did best for Dallington when he inflicted only the second loss of the season on Kevin Duffy. The Avonside firsts hammered a depleted Linwood team, 9-2, with Les Stewart and Darrin Entwistle attacking well to remain unbeaten on the night. Riccarton No. 2 beat the club’s first side, 7-4, with Grant McCarroll and Graham Lamb in punishing form. McCarroll, a former South Island champion, was having only his second outing of the season and will obviously be

a dangerous “wild card" in the Canterbury open championships this week-end.

Lansdowne beat Avonside No. 4 easily, the Canterbury women’s champion, Pam Shadbolt, and the junior, Blair Lockhart, both being unbeaten. The Avonside thirds beat their Riccarton counterparts very narrowly with Avonside’s Mark Lockhart continuing his recent run of good form to win all his three singles. Results:—
